Abstract: In the second half of the nineteenth century, almost simultaneously China and most Eastern European countries started to look for a way out for themselves. As the descendants of the Turkish nations living to the north of ancient China, many Hungarians came in for root-seeking, in order to build up their own national identities. 1867, Hungary merged with Austria under the Habsburg Monarchy to form the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This new-yet-old empire was eager to establish itself on the world atlas by “going out” for getting rid of the oppressed fate; whereas on the other end of the Eurasian Continent the late Qing Dynasty, baptized by the gunfire of invading imperialists, was also determined to save the kingdom by learning from the West and thus encouraged its people to go abroad to study western culture. Hungarian and Chinese people were then able to introduce themselves to each other to be enlightened with new ideas and to enjoy broadened scopes. This paper studies the primary sources of Sino-Hungarian exchanges. It reviews the history of exchanges between China and Hungary under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to examine the two-way influences and acceptance in the hope of providing historical reference and guarantee to advance future Sino-Hungarian bilateral cooperation.
