文学翻译中的整体细译与整体细评——从霍译《红楼梦》分卷标题的汉译谈起

On Overall-extended Close Translating and Criticism in Literary Translation

摘要: 受文学批评中“整体细读”法的启发,本文提出了文学翻译中“整体细译”以及文学翻译批评中“整体细评”的两个概念,强调局部与整体的互动以及整体对局部的控制作用,涉及文本内与文本外两大类因素,包括社会文化语境、相关互文资源、文本整体以及文本的所有构成成分。继而以上海外语教育出版社出版的霍译《红楼梦》汉英对照版各卷标题的汉译(如把THE GOLDEN DAYS译为“枉入红尘”,把THE DREAMER WAKES译为“万境归空”等)和其它典型的英汉互译案例对之进行了验证与说明。如果译者没有整体细译的意识与能力,这些漂亮的译文是不可能出现的。整体细译应遵循整体性与和谐性两大原则,可有效解释文学翻译中的“创造性叛逆”现象,同时也预设了整体细评的必要性。

Abstract: This paper, inspired by the concept of overall-extended close reading in literary criticism, puts forward two similar concepts in literary translation and literary translation criticism, namely, overall-extended close translating and close translation criticism, which place emphasis on the interaction between the part and the whole as well as the controlling role of the whole over the part (the whole mainly referring to a text as a whole). These two concepts, involving factors both inside and outside the text, such as social and cultural context, some inter-texts, text as a whole, and specific textual constituents, are illustrated and proven by the Chinese translation of the added subtitles of David Hawkes and John Minford’s translation of Hong Lou Meng (such as THE GOLDEN DAYS, THE WARNING VOICE, THE DREAMER WAKES etc added by the translators) published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press as well as other typical translation examples in literary translation. If a translator doesn’t have the awareness and ability of overall-extended close translating, he or she will never come up with such beautiful and suitable translations like the Chinese translation of D. Hawkes and J. Minford’s added subtitles of Hong Lou Meng. The practice of overall-extended translating in literary translation should follow wholeness principle as well as harmony principle. Moreover, similar phenomena of creative treasons in literary translation may be sufficiently explained within the framework of overall-extended translating which further presupposes the necessity of overall-extended translation criticism.
