Abstract: With the form of “serious plays”, Eugene O’Neill, the American playwright showed great concern of the fate and spirituality of mankind. The paper has made a close reading of All God’s Chillun Got Wings, Marco Millions, and The Iceman Cometh, three plays of Eugene O’Neill written in different periods, and found that O’Neill’s theatrical narration has deconstructive characteristics. O’Neill attempts to resolve social contradictions with his plays by deconstructing the racialism, western centralism and rational centralism in the hope of alleviating the spiritual suffering of people caused by modern industrialization. O’Neill’s deconstructive intent and ethical narration are rooted in the absence of his identity, the influence of oriental Taoism and psychoanalysis. The exploration on O’Neill’s deconstructive intent furnishes new perspectives and ways on O’Neill’s study in China as well as a good reference to be used to observe and solve the social conflicts of China today.
