Metaphorical Color Terms in Shakespeare’s Plays and Their Translation: A Metaphorical Cognitive Perspective

隐喻认知视角下莎剧中隐喻颜色词的汉译

Abstract: Besides indicating colors, the color terms in Shakespeare’s plays are used to describe abstract things, which are endowed with some metaphorical meanings; thus becoming a problem for the translation of Shakespeare’s plays. Taking metaphorical color terms in Shakespeare’s plays as research objects, color terms in Shakespeare’s four tragedies and four comedies are collected and analyzed; researching from the source domain and target domain of the metaphorical mapping and the conditions of mapping formation, this paper explores the translation strategies from the perspective of metaphorical cognition. It is concluded that two strategies can be adopted in translating the metaphorical color terms: one is “ideal mapping equivalence translation”, the other is “zigzag mapping equivalent translation”; cognitive metaphor can be used as a guiding theory for translation.

摘要: 莎剧中的颜色词除了表示色彩外,还用于描写抽象事物,形成颜色词的隐喻,隐喻化的颜色词成为莎剧汉译的难点之一。本文以莎剧中的隐喻颜色词为研究对象,进行语料统计与分析,在隐喻认知视角下,从隐喻映射的源域和目标域以及二者能够构成映射的条件,对隐喻颜色词的汉译进行分析,发现莎剧现有译本对隐喻颜色词的汉译策略可归结为两种:“理想映射对等翻译”和“曲折映射等效翻译”,隐喻认知是一种指导翻译的思维方式。
