Identification, Understanding and Translation of Deliberate Metaphors in Diplomatic Discourse of Great Powers with Chinese Characteristics

Abstract:

This paper adopts the perspective of deliberate metaphor theory, an emerging theory of cognitive metaphor, to examine 34 of President Xi Jinping’s by-lined overseas articles from 2014 to 2018 as a corpus to elaborate on the top leader’s diplomatic concepts in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Through a comparison of Chinese and English texts, this paper aims to investigate the translators’ understanding of deliberate metaphors in the diplomatic ideas and translation strategies employed. This paper attempts to contribute to extending President Xi Jinping’s diplomatic views that are reconstructed by interpreters for target text readers in a panoramic way to truly clarify China’s diplomatic views and attitudes. The goals are to promote friendly relations among countries and for the world to develop in a climate of peace and stability.

摘要：

本文从意图隐喻理论这一新兴的认知隐喻学理论视角出发，以习近平总书记2014—2018年发表的34篇海外署名文章为语料，通过汉英两种文本的对比，分析译者在翻译过程中对大国外交话语中意图隐喻的理解及其采用的翻译策略。研究发现，译者希冀将总书记的外交理念全景式地呈现给译语接受者，向其展现中国的外交观点，阐述在中国特色社会主义新时代国家最高领导人的外交理念，明确无误地亮明中国的外交态度，以促进国家之间的友好邦交与世界的和平稳定发展。
