Abstract: The quotations in news reports usually show up as the voices in news discourse, which are often manipulated by different news media and interest groups as a part of image building and interests’ protection. With eight reports from the official websites of China Daily and The Japan Times, this paper focuses on the meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the APEC meetings in November 2014. By comparing quotation modes and sources in the reports and analyzing the relationship between voices in news reports and manipulation, the paper comes up to the conclusion that as a means of manipulation, voices of the news discourse are the reflections of ideological considerations with an aim of guiding public opinions and striving for a greater say in the international community.
