Abstract:

Delexicalized verb constructions（DVC）in English, as provisional verbal combinations, are a marked language phenomenon. By employing the theory of pragmatics and functional grammar，this paper aims to explore the underlying rules with regard to DVC in the English language．To be more exact, the author discusses the language phenomenon from three perspectives：semantics，pragmatics and text. This paper shows that DVC may sometimes be synonymous with simple verb constructions or cognate object constructions，but cannot be superseded by such constructions．Whichever construction is appropriate is strictly constrained by linguistic rules．Semantically，the use of DVC is constrained by individual lexical semantic differences，lexical semantic gap and constructional semantic differences. Pragmatically，it is constrained by pragmatically rhetorical rules．Textually，the use of DVC is spurred by the implicit coherence requirement. In addition，style may also play a role concerned with the use of DVC in some cases．Finally, the findings in this paper may present some suggestions for teaching English, and to some extent are practical for studying grammar.
