English Major: How to Deal with Unfair Criticism?

In the past 20 years since the 21st century, English major has been faced with various criticisms from both inside and outside the discipline. Such criticisms have always existed and never stopped. On the one hand, this kind of criticism has played an important role in promoting the construction and development of the English major, while on the other hand, it has gradually turned its tide and entered into a mode of unfair blame, which accused the English major of being a profession without conscience, and put forward some suggestion to suspend the English major. This paper intends to argue against the unfair criticism of English major in recent years, pointing out that the English major cannot be viewed as a conscience-stricken major, to clearly distinguish the differences between English major and college English teaching, and its proposal to shut down the major or turn to the other majors is not the correct path of development. In addition, the normal academic discussion and communication should be attributed to the academic scope, rather than resorting to the media.

Emergency language services (ELS) has enjoyed unprecedented attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, existing studies have focused on making proposals for the construction of ELS mechanisms and the training of professionals. Few studies have explored practical ways to achieve this objective. We argue that the teaching of emergency language should be based on the following concepts: first, ELS should be extended to other fields such as maritime, aviation, customs, military and foreign affairs instead of being confined to health and medicine; second, the efficiency of ELS depends on emergency language teaching on a daily basis; third, emergency language teaching is the teaching of languages for specific purposes (LSP), rather than general language teaching. A person with a high language proficiency but without any specific knowledge in the given field could not be qualified for ELS. To conduct emergency language teaching, therefore, it is necessary to offer ELS programs in tertiary institutions. For example, English departments in the universities of maritime, aeronautics, customs, military, and foreign affairs might initiate such programs or provide related courses. The first step, however, is to change the dominant perception of the English major as liberal education.

This paper is intended to make a cognitive analysis of clean governance discourse on the basis of data from A Compilation of Xi Jinping’s Selected Remarks on Clean Governance and the Fight Against Corruption within the framework of framing theory. After extracting and analyzing metaphorical surface frames, non-metaphorical surface frames, and deep frames, we generalize its framing model. Centering on the issue of clean governance construction, the discourse reflects values of justice and rule of law—highlighting the multiple antagonistic roles between corruption fighters and corruptors in line with the inference of fairness and justice by defending the interests of the people and implementing severe punishments on lawbreakers—by using the devices of metaphors and frames. Three strategies for constructing clean governance discourse are derived from this model: namely, using the established value system as the keystone, adhering to inherent logic and highlighting cultural characteristics.

Ways of Constructing Chinese Media Discourse Power in the Shackles of Western Media Frames as Exemplified by an Event Involving Chinese Tourists in Sweden

The construction of international media discourse power plays an important role in enhancing China’s soft power and shaping its international image. However, China’s international media discourse has long been distorted by the Western media. Using Framing Theory to compare Western and Chinese news reports on an event involving Chinese tourists in Sweden in September 2018, this article probes media framing effects in Chinese and Western news media. The study finds that Western media is more effective in news framing, constructing frames like the “suspicion frame” and the “interpretation frame” for the event, which reinforced Western readers’ stereotypes of Chinese tourists. Chinese media, however, failed to realize the significance of media framing. Their “weakness frame” and “condemnation frame” ignored the acceptance of international audiences and consequently failed to achieve media discourse influence and authority. This study shows that to enhance media effect, Chinese news media need to learn how to effectively express Chinese cultural ideas and improve the influence of discourse communication. They need to analyze in depth what kind of frames can break through the barriers of cognitive biases and stereotypes that exist between the West and China, exploring a way of arousing the empathy of Western audiences through effective media discourse.

Xi Jinping’s report at the 19th CPC National Congress is filled with numerous political metaphors manifested in various conceptual metaphors and metaphorical expressions, and it has great research value. Cognitive linguistics provides theoretical support and methodology for the identification, comprehension, translation, and evaluation of political metaphors. It helps to deal with differences among languages, cultures, and ideologies, retaining the convergence of connotation and compensating for the divergence of implication. This paper takes the political metaphor and its translation in Xi Jinping’s report at 19th CPC National Congress as the research object. It aims to explore the features of political metaphor in the report from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, probe into its translation strategies, and evaluate its translation quality in order to provide theoretical support and methodology for the further study of CPC literature translation.

Embodying double voices, free indirect discourse is characterized by narrative contents and reported forms, both of which should be given attention during its translation. The present study focuses on translator behavior in the translation of Chinese free indirect discourse into English based on Rickshaw Boy, as translated by Howard Goldblatt. The findings show that in the translation of Chinese free indirect discourse into English, the translator’s behavior can mainly be classified into an intra-translational category, with truth-seeking in contents and utility-attaining in forms, and an extra-translational category, with truth-seeking in forms and utility-attaining in contents. With intra-translational behavior, the translator may retain the free indirect reported form or replace it with indirect reported discourse, direct reported discourse and narrative report, as a result of focusing on intra-linguistic elements. As for extra-translational behavior, he may employ target language expressions to imitate the source discourse, alter the original semantic gravity, add or omit the source content or adapt the original semantic intensity to attain utility in contents for the sake of the target readers. Considering the linguistic elements and the social context, the translator focuses on the dynamic balance between the degree of truth-seeking and utility-attaining in represented contents and reported forms to promote the rationality of the English version. From the perspective of translator behavior, this paper broadens and deepens the theoretical study of the translation of discourse representation, while also providing guidance for translating reported discourses in Chinese novels.

Arendt’s theory of political-aesthetic judgment is primarily embodied in her Lectures on Kant’s Political Philosophy and other related works. She uses Kant’s Critique of Judgment as her theoretical basis and creates her own “political” ideas that enter the mind through the perceptual practice of the public realm—aesthetic judgment. She not only excavates the political essence contained in Kant’s “aesthetic judgment” in an original manner, but also constructs her own aesthetics of politics. Arendt’s theory of political-aesthetic judgment aims to reveal the defects of traditional western political philosophy, expand criticism and reflect on rational violations of freedom, and ultimately expects to achieve the political purpose of people’s freedom and authentic existence in the public domain. This is the theoretical basis for politics to enter the aesthetic category in the “post-theory” era. Thus, Arendt’s theory of political-aesthetic judgment makes tension between aesthetics and politics disappear, makes affinity show, and makes homogeneity arise. Lectures on Kant’s Political Philosophy has an immense impact on the aesthetic transformation of postmodern western political ethics and also provides a reference for how to rationally consider the issues of aesthetics, politics, and the community of human destiny for all mankind; therefore, it has current, important academic and practical significance.

Using Chinese research papers from the CSSCI journal database from 2001 to 2018 as samples, this paper aims to inquire into the research focus and trends of business English in China. It conducts a quantitative analysis of the relationship between research status and focus in the framework of co-word analysis and data visualization. The results indicate that: (1) the amount of research in the field of business English reached its peak in 2011 and then declined steadily; and (2) the domestic research covers four areas, i.e., construction and initiation of business English majors in accordance with national standards for business English majors, business English studies based on corpora methods, talents training models of high vocational school students based on need analysis theory, and business English teaching and reform in interdisciplinary perspectives.

On the Xiang and Yi of Linguistic Representation of Chinese Characters

A language reflects the thinking mode of a nation who uses it. Different languages used by different nations must be branded with their different and special ways of thinking. Grounded on the idea that there exists a discrepancy between the temporal-thinking orientation of English and the spatial-thinking orientation of Chinese, this paper holds that the Chinese spatiality orientation originates from the Xiang and Yi modes of thinking in traditional Chinese philosophy, and that the deeply rooted imagery in this way of thinking gives Chinese strong imagery characteristics. Based on this view, the paper attempts to analyze Chinese characters in the following three ways: first, by making a classification of Xiang and clarifying its features; secondly, by further clarifying the characteristics of Yi which arise from Xiang; and thirdly, by analyzing Chinese characters’ structures through Liushu theory, finding that imagery thinking permeates every shu’s structures and that both such a thinking mode and Liushu’s structures are progressive and creative. This paper argues that it is the primary of imagery thinking in Chinese that determines the language’s preference for the spatial mode of thinking and the evident imagery characteristics of Chinese characters’ structures.
