Abstract: Through the statistics of nearly 100 sentence fragments in English writing with respect to their information structure types (the relation between fragments and other information), semantic distribution and their proportion, the paper makes a qualitative study about the characteristics and distribution of sentence fragments appearing in the writing of Chinese college students. Then the paper, via questionnaire and interview, tries to find the answers to these two questions. (1) Is sentence fragment rhetorically motivated or a linguistic error? (2) Are students aware of this linguistic error? The discoveries are surprising: Almost all fragments are linguistic errors rather than rhetorical deviation; 90% of the students are not aware of their own mistakes. Then give attribution analysis can help Chinese students to find out the reasons why such mistakes happen and make the right judgment in their English writing and they can Consciously use various rhetorical means to achieve the rhetoric purpose.

摘要: 本文通过对学生英文写作中出现的近100 个“句子片段”的信息结构类型(片段信息和其他信息的关系)、语义分布及其所占比例的语料进行统计,对中国学生发生“句子片段”的特征、分布进行定性研究。通过问卷调查和面谈,主要想回答两个问题:(1)“句子片段”在中国学生的英文写作中到底是出于修辞考虑?还是一种语言失误?(2)中国学生对“句子片段”语言失误的敏感程度多大?结果发现,受调查者“句子片段”的使用基本上均为语言失误;而且有90% 的学生没有意识到这种失误。那么,对发生此类失误可能的原因进行归因分析,可有助于中国学生在写作中找出错误原因,做出正确判断,有意识地使用各种修辞手段以达到修辞目的。
