The facilitative role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) has been widely acknowledged, and students’ attitudes toward GenAI have a significant influence on the adoption of GenAI technologies. While current scales can assess students’ attitudes toward artificial intelligence (AI), they are not tailored to GenAI. Therefore, the reliability and validity of the existing scales require reconsideration. To address the research gaps, this study was to develop and validate a scale to assess Chinese university students’ attitudes toward GenAI-assisted EFL learning. Our study comprises two separate samples. As for Sample 1 (n=379), we used an exploratory factor analysis to develop a scale consisting of 15 items that we categorized according to three dimensions (affect, behavior, and cognition), explaining a total variance of 65.719%. As for Sample 2 (n=418), a confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that this three-factor structure was appropriate. In addition, we evaluated the scale’s criterion validity, internal consistency, and measurement invariance across genders, and found a strong performance across these measures. Thus, the scale developed in this study exhibited robust psychometric properties, and can effectively assess Chinese learners’ attitudes toward GenAI-assisted language learning in the context of Chinese universities.

Research on teachers’ digital literacies is a burgeoning topic in foreign language education; thus, understanding the status quo of teachers’ digital literacy development is an important prerequisite for the emerging field of technology-empowered foreign language education. Using questionnaires and interviews as the research methodology, the present study aims to assess the development of the digital literacies of 316 English teachers in elementary and secondary schools in China and to identify the factors that influence the teachers’ development of digital literacies. The results has revealed that the overall development of teachers’ digital literacies is desirable, and the ranking of the dimensions of teachers’ digital literacies is as follows: digital morality > digital attitude > digital awareness > digital ability > digital knowledge. In addition, factors such as age and educational background have a significant impact on the development of teachers’ digital literacies, while gender and school location have no significant impact. Digital nativity significantly influences teachers’ digital literacy. Finally, corresponding countermeasures to intervene in and to improve the development of foreign language teachers’ digital literacies are proposed, echoing the call for AI-empowered foreign language teaching and the facilitation of teachers’ professional development.

ChatGPT, based on a wide range of pre-trained Internet text data, can assist in completing translations and creative writing. This study, however, is an experiment on writing a research paper with the help of ChatGPT. We selected a research topic and used ChatGPT to generate each section of the research paper — title, outline, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, and references — according to the prompts provided. The results reveal that ChatGPT can successfully write an entire paper based on hypothetical data, generating high-quality text with appropriate content and language quickly and efficiently, which saves a significant amount of time and effort. The limitations are also obvious, including the use of outdated studies, inconsistent arguments, irrelevant and illogical explanations of the results, and incredible citations. We suggest integrating ChatGPT into academic writing courses offered at tertiary institutions. Teaching students to effectively use it could be made the core of the instruction. For instance, students may learn to ask questions, give correct and specific prompts, identify mistakes or problems in the generated texts, as well as ensure the texts’ accuracy, consistency, and credibility, and be knowledgeable about the topic selected for the paper. Students should learn to follow academic conventions and avoid plagiarism.

The human-AI interactive language-learning environment, driven by artificial intelligence (AI), presents new opportunities for self-regulated learning (SRL). However, the specific manifestations of SRL within this environment still require further exploration. To address this, a three-level coding has been conducted using MAXQDA 12 software, based on grounded theory by analyzing retrospective logs and interview data from 30 graduate students majoring in English. In addition, a theoretical saturation test has been performed to check the coding results with the aim of identifying the specific manifestations of SRL in human-AI interactive language-learning environments and to construct a theoretical model of SRL. The SRL model that has been developed in this study consists of three phases: personalized learning planning, SRL implementation, and reflection on learning process and outcomes. The personalized learning planning phase includes a needs analysis, experience seeking, goal-plan setting, and recommendation and selection of learning resources. The SRL implementation phase encompasses task completion, human-AI collaborative assessment, human-AI monitoring and regulation, human-AI supportive guidance, and community interaction. The reflection-on-learning-process-and-outcomes phase focuses on summarizing effective outcomes and identifying areas that requires improvement. This three-phase SRL model not only expands the theoretical perspectives on SRL, but also provides intervention strategies to enhance learners’ SRL capabilities in human-AI interactive language-learning environments.

The Illustrated Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine and the Multimodal Translation of Classical Traditional Chinese Medicine Texts
Chen Jing, Liu Yunhong
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2021, 43 (3): 103-115.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.340
Abstract3763)   HTML159)    PDF(pc) (2473KB)(5312)       Save

In recent years, the importance of the translation of classical traditional Chinese medicine texts has increased due to the acceleration in the pace of the dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine. As a masterpiece of ancient Chinese medical achievements, the translation and the introduction of Huangdi Neijing has a meaning that cannot be ignored if traditional classical works describing Chinese medicine are to be disseminated across the world and convey China’s unique voice; thus, they are worthy of in-depth attention in the field of translation. In 1997, the comic version of Huangdi Neijing, The Illustrated Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine, was published, providing a new multimodal path for the dissemination of classical traditional Chinese medicine treatises overseas. Historically, translation studies have centered on language studies, and have ignored the role of other symbolic resources in constructing textual meaning. This paper focuses on the multimodal translation of classical traditional Chinese medicine treatises and examines them from the dual aspects of text modality and image modality. On one hand, it summarizes the problems and shortcomings of the translation of the text part; on the other hand, it compares and analyzes the translation of image modality from the perspective of image narration. Finally, it summarizes its influence on the readers’ acceptance and the dissemination of classical traditional Chinese medicine texts, and provides suggestions for presenting the classics as comics in the hope of providing references for the translation of and introduction to traditional Chinese medicine.

Phonology, Phonetics and Pronunciation Teaching
MA Qiuwu / ZHAO Yonggang
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2017, 39 (4): 40-55.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.106
Abstract3742)      PDF(pc) (682KB)(5594)       Save
Stereotyped as simple oral pronunciation training, pronunciation teaching is actually a process to guide the learners to achieve phonological acquisition of different phonetic forms. As a prerequisite for the successful acquisition of a foreign language, pronunciation teaching is one of the key links in foreign language teaching. This paper begins with a discussion of the main differences and similarities among phonology, phonetics and pronunciation teaching. Phonology is primarily concerned with the conceptual system of phonological symbols and phonetics mainly deals with the physical manifestation of these conceptual symbols. While the phonological concept of “a sound” may well be taken as a continuous “range of quantitative variations in phonetic values”, any value within which can be treated as that sound, the most representative one is the peak value of that range and its representativeness or typicality decreases gradually from the peak to the ends of both sides. The purport of pronunciation teaching is to help learners progress gradually from non-typical or non-representative interval values (or even some wrong values) to the most representative or typical peak value in their sound production and perception, and enable them to acquire the ability to distinguish phonetic values from different ranges, i.e., the phonological ability of sound production and perception. The fact that many of the beginners will often return to their original state soon after they receive the correction of their pronunciation reflects to some extent that a person’s oral pronunciation is in fact largely dependent on his underlying phonological awareness or ability. After identifying some of the major problems that exist in the current foreign language pronunciation teaching in China, the paper points out explicitly that the poor pronunciation of the non-native speakers mainly lies in the problem that the unstressed are often not unstressed enough in pronunciation. Therefore, in our pronunciation teaching, emphasis must be laid on the relation between the individual sounds and the overall natural flow that is composed of these sounds, and the relation between the individual stereotyped sound gesture and the general trend of elastic sound wave in our speech. Hence, the paper demonstrates in detail that our pronunciation teaching aims not merely to improve the learners' foreign language pronunciation, but more importantly to help the learners increase their phonological awareness, set up a system of inner phonological concepts of the language they intend to acquire, and truly grasp the actual pronunciation of the target language.

CiteSpace was employed in this study to investigate the trends, features, and key topics in overseas studies of second language (L2) written corrective feedback (WCF) from 1996 to 2024 based on the Web of Science database. The results revealed that research on WCF in countries other than China has increased. The studies were mainly published in linguistics and education journals, and featured the integration of psychology and computer science. Starting from the debate about the effectiveness of WCF, research on WCF underwent four shifts in the research foci, namely from external factors to internal psychological factors, from the effects of WCF to its process, from a micro perspective to a macro one, and from teacher and peer feedback to digital intelligence-empowered feedback. Future Chinese studies of WCF could adopt a dynamic, macro perspective to explore the effects of the feedback that is provided by automated writing evaluation systems and large language models on L2 writing performance based on theories such as the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Researchers could further emphasize learners’ cognitive and affective individual differences and their engagement with feedback, and could examine learners’ and teachers’ feedback literacy. It is also suggested that researchers should improve data collection methods by integrating eye tracking, keystroke logging, and neuroimaging techniques to investigate WCF in more depth.

As a new research field, multimodal discourse analysis is facing a lot of challenges. On the one hand, the status of multimodality in traditional linguistics is questioned. Many linguists argue that nonlinguistic signs such as gestures and visual images are out of the scope of linguistics. On the other hand, the theories and methods of multimodal discourse analysis are still at an early stage of development and have many limitations. Moreover, many researchers have misunderstandings of the field. In view of these, this article provides a brief explanation of the basic questions of multimodal discourse analysis, including why we analyze multimodal discourse, whether linguistic theories are applicable to nonlinguistic signs such as visual images and gesture, what is the scope of multimodal research, what are the main theories and methods, and what are the limitations and misunderstandings. It further points out that researchers need to have the awareness of making their research interdisciplinary, empirical, and application-oriented. It argues that multimodal research should be based on theoretical and methodological innovation, and should aim at solving real communication problems in the multimedia age. The accurate understanding of these questions is crucial for developing multimodal discourse analysis into a new discipline with strong theoretical and methodological support.

“Motherlove” has long been bound to motherhood as its most important parameter and becomes an important ethical criterion for mothers’ existence. However, contemporary American writer Mary Gordon, questioning such a criterion, demonstrates the ethical limit of motherlove and its constructiveness most truthfully in her novel Men and Angels, which gives voice to mothers’ various forms of existence. This paper discusses the ethical limit of motherlove from the perspective of the ontological existence of motherlove which emphasizes that mothers are not just the givers of love but also the subjects of love who are able to love themselves at the very beginning; the dislocation of motherlove which means that motherlove may be oriented to other children instead of their own ones—this can be a huge ethical challenge for traditional concept of motherlove; and the heterogeneity of motherlove which accepts negative feelings like “hatred” as part of motherlove so that the ethical limit of motherlove may be negotiated and the pressure mothers suffer may be relieved. Understanding these three aspects will help readers see the possibility for mothers to thrive in the process of becoming the subjects of love and eventually turn the ethically limited motherlove into the realm of infinite motherlove.

Essay of Dramatic Poesy: From Fictional Literary Dialogue  to Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns

Essay of Dramatic Poesy by John Dryden has been regarded as a work of literary criticism with a focus on the three unities. This paper aims to break through this traditional interpretation and point out the ignored significance of Essay of Dramatic Poesy. By reading this work closely against the literary and historical background of the West, we can find that both the setting and the interlocutors in Essay of Dramatic Poesy are more imaginary than real. Essay of Dramatic Poesy is a fictional literary dialogue. Dryden suggests more than once about this fictionalization in the part of dedication to his patron before the dialogue proper. The naming of the four characters also points to this fictionalization. The arguments involving the three unities, comparisons between English and French drama, and between the ancient and the modern drama, are all closely related to the quarrel of the ancients and the moderns, and are in fact embodiments of this quarrel. Dryden’s juxtaposition of the dialogue between the four speakers on the Thames and the encountering of the English fleet with the Dutch at sea near the mouth of the Thames is by no means random, but in fact purposeful and related to this quarrel. However, this has seldom been mentioned by scholars. In short, Essay of Dramatic Poesy as a fictional literary dialogue has proved to be a tool with which Dryden takes part in this quarrel. This research will to some extent update the scholarship on Dryden and Essay of Dramatic Poesy.

Live speech acts in situated discourse are performed by live “whole persons” who interact with the environment in a multimodal way. In this sense, speech acts are suggested to be studied in the perspective of human behavior and in the framework of social situation. With the help of Corpus Linguistics and multimodal approach to language study, researchers are able to further investigate pragmatic issues to develop a better understanding on human interaction and refine traditional pragmatic theories or concepts. Adopting the method of Multimodal Corpus Linguistics and the basic thought of Simulative Modeling, the pilot study in this paper shows that the live illocutionary act is rooted in the whole multimodal interaction of speakers, thus the illocutionary force is multimodal in nature. Illocutionary Force Indicating Devices range in its scope from language structures, prosodic features to non-verbal gestures, etc. All these resources, which are impacted by speakers’ occurrent emotions and other factors, work in a collaborative way to help speakers to perform illocutionary acts. These findings are in compliance with Austin’s observation on the accompaniments of the utterance when a speaker performs an illocutionary act. The findings extend the inquiry of Speech Act Theory and develop the concept of Illocutionary Force Indicating Device by using the novel method and new linguistic data. This paper provides a reference for further study of pragmatic issues based on multimodal corpus, multimodal approach to pragmatic study, or even Multimodal (Corpus) Pragmatics, therefore, should receive due attention.

Linguistic landscapes originally referred to publicly presented and displayed language items, including street signs and shop names. The definition has recently been expanded to account for the use of various types of semiotic resources in public spaces. Focusing on multilingual and multimodal communication in superdiverse metropolitan cities, linguistic landscape studies have aimed to reveal sociolinguistic issues of ideology and identity through the analysis of public signage. Internationally, linguistic landscape research has moved away from the ethnolinguistic vitality theory and quantitative distribution analysis to adopting more in-depth and interdisciplinary perspectives, including metrolingualism and ethnography. However, linguistic landscape studies in the Chinese context still tend to focus on counting the frequency of language, categorizing signs and making speculative statements about sign makers. To further understand the complexity of linguistic landscapes, this paper offers a comprehensive review of the extant theories and approaches in the field, with a focus on superdiversity, metrolingualism and ethnography. It aims to provide new analytical perspectives for linguistic landscape researchers in China and additional references for further research into the underlying reasons for the structuration of linguistic landscape.

Environmental protection, as a hot topic, has been drawing great attention for a long time. Especially, in recent years a number of haze reports have appeared and they hold different attitudes and opinions towards the haze phenomenon. At present, the virtual image of a country depicted by mainstream media is of great significance for the construction of national image. So, it’s necessary for us to make clear the ideological reflections within the haze report made by the western media, which is much beneficial for China to report in a more proper and suitable way. The perspective, critical discourse analysis provides us with some inspirations and insights into the analysis of ideology. To be specific, dialectical-relational approach (DRA) is employed during the process of critical discourse analysis. The analytical framework is constructed from the following four stages: stage one, to focus upon a social wrong, in its semiotic aspect; stage two, to identify obstacles to addressing the social wrong; stage three, to consider whether the social order “needs” the social wrong; stage four, to identify possible ways to overcome the obstacles. This paper, based on a self-established mini corpus, explores the differences about the haze reports in the Chinese and American media. The data analysis is carried out from the four aspects: word frequency, concordance line, collocates, and clusters. After the microstructure analysis of data and the macrostructure analysis with DRA, it is found that the reports on the haze reveal great differences in the media, which in fact is a good reflection of the ideological disparity. The American media, intending to set up a negative image of China, lays great emphasis on the cause and effect of haze, while the Chinese media on the management and future prospects.

Perezhivanie” is a crucial concept in Vygotsky’s thinking, but is also the one that lacks connotations and empirical explorations. Due to the increasing interest in the topic of emotion, the concept of perezhivanie is being revitalized; therefore, it is necessary to provide a more systematic and comprehensive account of its content. Starting from the philosophical roots of sociocultural theory, this paper elaborates on the theoretical content in the concept of perezhivanie, and explores the conceptual content of perezhivanie as a unit of analysis in the context of the dialectical unity of “emotion and cognition” and “society and the individual”. The study then examines different scholars’ conceptual and empirical interpretations of perezhivanie, and explores the paradigms and methods of empirical research guided by perezhivanie in the field of second language acquisition with a view to providing new ideas for future research.

Reading is a crucial skill required by individuals in the course of language acquisition. It is affected by various cognitive factors. In recent years, children with attention deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) have received more and more attention. The symptoms of ADHD children include: inattention, hyperaction, and impulse. Among them, inattention is the main characteristic of children with ADHD. Because of their unique deficit, ADHD children will also develop problems in their language acquisition and reading development. Research outside of China has shown a high comorbidity rate between ADHD and Reading Disabilities (RD). RD refers to a condition in which a student displays difficulty in reading in spite of normal IQ. It is the most common disability in regular school settings. In western countries, research has demonstrated that deficits in phonological processing, attention, and working memory may cause reading problems in children with ADHD. However, there is limited research on reading development of ADHD children within China. The existing studies in Chinese RD have reported that morphological awareness is a core deficit for Chinese children with RD. Due to the high comorbidity rate between RD and ADHD, we hypothesize that morphological awareness may be a powerful predictor of reading difficulties in addition to inattention of children with ADHD in China. This paper first reviews studies about cognitive predictors of reading development of ADHD children published outside of China, and then reviews reading research on children with ADHD or RD in China, and finally suggests directions for future research, in the hope of laying some theoretical foundations for future studies.

English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education: Developing Scientific Literacy
Cai Jigang
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2024, 46 (1): 19-28.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.495

English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2022 Edition) postulates that cultural awareness is one of the key competencies for students. Although this is understandable, considering the critical role of scientific literacy in compulsory education, we suggest that the key competencies should include scientific literacy education, which is an active response to the government decision that the scientific literacy of young boys and girls should be greatly improved during the 14th Five-Year Plan. Scientific literacy is the basis of cultural awareness and cross-disciplinary studies. Without the fundamentals of scientific knowledge and methodology, youths will lack the intellectual tools and social responsibility needed for true cultural awareness. After analyzing the causes underlying the dearth of attention paid to scientific literacy education in compulsory and even higher education, we suggest reforms are needed in the development of teaching materials, the methodology of English instruction, and the organization of various scientific activities.

Mo Yan is one of the best writers of contemporary China and his works have been translated and circulated in the Anglosphere for three decades. By dividing the translation history of Mo Yan’s works in the Anglosphere into four phases, this article attempts to delineate the history by characterizing each phase and then to evaluate their reception based on book reviews in public media and academic journals. It is found out that the first phase (1988-1992) saw the translation of Mo Yan’s short stories and novellas but the readership was restricted to the academic circle; in the second phase (1993-1999), with the translation of Red Sorghum and The Garlic Ballads by Howard Goldblatt, Mo Yan began to be known to the general Anglophone public; in the third phase (2000-2012), the publication of three more novels in English and the positive reception among readers paved the way for the “consecration” of Mo Yan as a Nobel Laureate, signaling the change of status from a local to an international writer; and in the fourth phase (from 2012 to the present), the controversy about Mo Yan’s political stance led to the critical acceptance of his new publications, but the publication of Frog in English two years later subdued the severe criticism, and judgements about Mo Yan were made more on the intrinsic literary value of the work. Mo Yan’s case is significant in providing new insights for the globalization of Chinese literature.

As a brand-new research field of sociolinguistics, the study of linguistic landscape interprets the relationship between language and space by means of analyzing the variety of linguistic signs in public space such as public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings, which in general can be divided into top-down signs and bottom-up signs and which are equipped with informative function and symbolic function. The article reviews the chronological development of linguistic landscape studies at home and abroad, expounds the research contents in detail which contain Linguistic Landscape in a narrow sense represented by Landry & Bourhis (1997), Gorter (2006a, 2006b) and Backhaus (2007) , Semiotic Landscape by Jaworski & Thurlow (2010a, 2010b) and Geosemiotics by Scollon & Scollon (2003), and has a thorough and in-depth discussion about theoretical and methodological argumentations of this study in the following five aspects of (1) the samples’ representativeness and scope, (2) the sample’s unit of analysis, (3) the samples’ categorizations, (4) the signs’ authorship, primary functions and intended readers, and (5) quantitative or qualitative analysis. This study reflects the diverse linguistic phenomena in terms of language conflict, language contact, language maintenance, language change and ethnolinguistic vitality, so on and so forth, which demonstrate overt or covert linguistic prestige, power relations and social status embodied in the language use and language choice. In the end, the article puts forward personal views about the prospective linguistic landscape studies in China.

As a new NLP machine learning model with an extensive ability to produce content, ChatGPT has the potential to transform traditional translation teaching models. However, ChatGPT may also decrease students’ ability to learn autonomously, may undermine teacher-student relationships, damage academic integrity and knowledge security, and lead to ethical and ideological risks. In order to address the challenges and to make full use of ChatGPT in the teaching of translation, it is necessary to change the traditional way of teaching, to reform the teaching process, to improve students’ ability to learn autonomously, to increase education in translation ethics, to control ideological risks, and to enhance teachers and students’ digital literacy.

Desire, Surplus-enjoyment and Dreams: A Psychoanalytic Reading of Macbeth
Chen Bihao
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2020, 42 (2): 76-90.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.276
Abstract2470)   HTML2270)    PDF(pc) (1416KB)(14195)       Save

Many traditional critics tend to relate the supernatural images in Macbeth with the three Fates and thus ignored the dimension of psychological reality in the play. By applying Lacanian and Žižekian psychoanalysis in the interpretation of the supernatural images of the three witches in Macbeth, this paper concludes that the three witches are no more than the rhetoric of Macbeth’s inner desire, and their prophecy is the metonymy of Macbeth’s unconscious. Different witch imagery in different versions of Macbeth allow new interpretations of the play. Macbeth saw Lady Macbeth’s gaze on the three witches, and his desire was established through Lady Macbeth’s desire. Macbeth tried to respond to the emptiness of ‘the Other’ by filling up the emptiness of his inner desire but he lost himself in the pursuit of power. Lady Macbeth indulged herself in ‘surplus-enjoyment’ derived from Macbeth’s supreme royal power. However, when Lady Macbeth failed to satisfy her desire with surplus-enjoyment, she was doomed to lose her reason and perish. By describing the supernatural images and Macbeth’s uncanny dreams, William Shakespeare displays Macbeth’s and Lady Macbeth’s profound inner worlds, which reveal his concern about humanism to a greater extent.

Itô Sohei is a Redologist, a textual critic and also a renowned translator both at home and abroad. His effort has helped to connect the Japanese academia of Redology with its counterpart in China and the rest of the world, enabling Redology in Japan to claim a place in the prospering Redology in the world and making significant contribution to the translation and research of A Dream of Red Mansions. However, after reviewing previous studies at home and abroad the author finds that despite Itô Sohei’s remarkable accomplishment in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions, researches directed to his translation have just started and are far from satisfying both in quantity and quality. Firstly, although some research results have been published during the last five years, the study of Itô Sohei’s Japanese translation of A Dream of Red Mansions is still scanty and shallow overall. Secondly, the existing researches lack theoretical perspectives and new methodology from translation studies and other related disciplines. In addition, less attention than necessary is paid to some other important issues such as stylistics and reader’s reception of Itô Sohei’s translation of A Dream of Red Mansions in previous researches. This thesis further proposes that the future research should be organically combined with the latest achievements in contemporary translation theories, and the depth and width of the study of Japanese translation of Itô Rinheung’s A Dream of Red Mansions should be broadened, thus translation theories can be truly integrated into the text.

Following the text-oriented and culture-oriented paradigms, studies on translation criticism are now heading towards a new paradigm, namely, the translators’ behaviour-oriented paradigm. The text-oriented paradigm focuses on intra-translation issues, and the culture-oriented paradigm focuses on extra-translation factors. Though the two paradigms once played positive roles in certain contexts, they gradually began to exhibit limitations and deficiencies. The translators’ behaviour-oriented paradigm takes both intra-translation issues and extra-translation factors into account, combining the evaluation of translators’ behaviour and the quality of translated texts, the static analysis of text and the dynamic study of context, and prescriptive and descriptive studies. The new paradigm was first proposed a decade ago. In 2019, which marks the 10th year of its development, the author interviewed its advocator Professor Zhou Lingshun, who reviewed the development of the theory, reiterated the significance of constructing native translation theories for international translation studies, clarified several issues susceptible to misunderstandings and proposed specific suggestions for further studies. The translators’ behaviour-oriented paradigm and the relevant theoretical framework constructed by Professor Zhou is now being viewed as one of the representatives of native translation theories, which will certainly promote the development of translation studies and translation criticism.

On the English Translation Strategies of Chinese Classics from the Perspective of Cultural Philosophy: A Case Study on Bizarre Happenings Eyewitnessed Over Two Decades by Shih Shun Liu
Bingyun Shi
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2019, 41 (5): 68-80.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.245
Abstract2429)   HTML12)    PDF(pc) (1536KB)(2697)       Save

In Shih Shun Liu’s English translation of Erh-shih Nien Mu-tu Chih Kuai Hsien-chuangBizarre Happenings Eyewitnessed Over Two Decades), published in 1977, the translator has tactfully employed domestication and foreignization strategies while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original book. On the one hand, he has omitted unnecessary details, repetition and doggerel couplets that add nothing to the story but a great deal to the cost of publication, which helps to highlight the storyline and reinforce the theme. By reconstructing the plots and adapting the chapter titles, he has changed the typical narrative mode in Chinese writing to meet the intended readers’ expectation. He has also chosen to simplify some culturally-embedded expressions that contain dross of feudalism and may thus cause great difficulty for the intended readers. On the other hand, the translator has turned to transliteration with interpretation when encountering expressions that embody the essence of Chinese traditional culture to avoid cultural default for the intended readers. In addition, he has dug into the original work and managed to convey the implied meaning in the translation. Word-for-word translation has also been adopted when it is necessary to effectively introduce the Chinese culture into the English world. From the viewpoint of the paper, the combined application of domestication and foreignization strategies contributes to both a successful construction of China’s image with true characters and maximization of the efficiency and value of the translation. The domestication strategy reflects the translator’s cultural awareness whereas the foreignization strategy highlights his cultural confidence. Such cultural awareness and confidence result from the translator’s profound cultural self reflection.

The Uncertain “Literariness”——On Roman Jakobson’s “Dominant” Poetics
JIANG Fei
Journal of Beijing International Studies University    2016, 38 (3): 84-98.   DOI: 10.12002/j.bisu.2016.009
Abstract2339)      PDF(pc) (818KB)(5014)       Save
“Literariness”, “poetic function” and “dominant” are three related and inseperable core categories in Roman Jakobson’s structural linguistic poetics, but “Dominant” is the first door to “Literariness” and “poetic function”. In two articles, “Dominant” and “Linguistics and Poetics”, he not only gives a clear definition of the “dominant”, and explains the structural features of the poetic work, also analyzes the inner rule of the evolution of literature (poetry) and art detailedly, reveals the moving characteristics of "literariness", and further proposes that the poetic function is verbal art’s dominant function, which determine the concrete manifestation of “literariness”. “Dominant” determines the characteristics of literature genre and structure of the work. The continuous transformation between the dominant function and the subordinate function causes the regular and constant evolution of literary system, and the formation of literariness. The “poetic function”, which takes up the dominant and determinate function in verbal art, acts as a subsidiary, accessory constituent in non-verbal art. "Dominant" poetics not only realize the “the historicization of the form” and “the formalization of history”, also realize the correction of the early Russian formalist poetics’ mechanization ills by structural linguistic poetics and the development of the Prague School’s poetics. In the context of contemporary culture, we need to understand and absorb the inherent spirit of “Dominant” poetics, bring the interpretation effect and theoretical value into full play in the changeable context of national reality, historical culture and literary conception, and explore the uncertain “literariness” sequentially between the interaction of “form” and “history”.

Abstract2290)      PDF(pc) (633KB)(3217)       Save
The study of language aging serves as an important perspective to investigate the human language development and cognitive change, which is also socially and clinically significant to today’s reaction to global population aging. Over the last decade, many Western countries with large elderly populations have initiated many research projects in various aspects of language aging, including cognitive change and language understanding, language production and social interaction, language aging of dementia patients, etc. With the adoption of both linguistic and interdisciplinary methods, these abundant research outputs suggest that the fundamental causes of human language aging include cognitive and physiological aging, neurodegenerative diseases and other health declines. New research projects initiated in China are suggested to foster and build up interdisciplinary research teams, adopt the multimodal corpus approach and collect rich longitudinal data. Additionally, more attention should be paid to the Chinese elders with dementia or other diseases.
