Abstract:

Using a grammaticality judgment test and a Chinese-to-English translation test, the paper explores the acquisition of verbal and adjectival raising constructions by 90 Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The results revealed that the [EPP] feature was successfully reassembled in the intermediate and advanced groups. No difference between the two types of raising constructions was found because the movement of the argument was triggered by the [EPP] feature in both constructions. In addition, the animacy of the argument influenced the selection of lexical items in the construction of numeration. Both the intermediate and the advanced groups were inclined to producing DP-phrase raising constructions with an inanimate argument; however, expletive-it raising constructions were produced by both groups when the argument was animate. No difference between verbal and adjectival raising constructions was found. The argument in this paper is that the preference stemmed from the semantic relationship between the argument and the verb, as well as due to first language (L1) transfer.

Keywords: feature reassembly; selection of lexical items; verbal raising construction; adjectival raising construction
